Tabular Mobile 1.2 lockup when choosing "alternate picking exercises" from iCloud

First and foremost: Tabular (OSX and iOS) is the best app I've bought in the past couple years. Serious kudos — these apps are so useful and well designed I'm kind of in shock.

One small things that just made me grin all over: you notate strum direction in your app the way my brain works. In Tabular, a "downstroke" is notated with an upward arrow (toward the high E string). I'm trying to learn economy/sweep picking with some tablature exercises that indicate a downstroke with a "V"!

Sadly, I can reliably lock up the iPad app on my 64 GB iPad 3 wifi+cellular (A1430) running 7.1.1 (11D201).

I can reliably reproduce the problem by:

  1. Deleting the app, and re-installing it on my iPad.

  2. Opening the app and selecting "Use iCloud."

  3. Selecting "Skip" to get past the welcome tutorial.

  4. Selecting "Alternate Picking Exercises / Tabular Examples" from the library.

It goes to a white screen with the spinner and appears to stay their indefinitely. The only way I seem to be able to get back to a working app is to delete it from my iPad and re-install. It's possible this is specific to me (something specific to my iCloud documents) but I'm stumped.

Thanks in advance for any assistance!

P.S. Sorry to overload the trouble report, but I'd also like to chime in on the feature request to hide the tablature and just show the notes on the staff. Not during note entry, but only during "practice"/playback mode — specifically to help me learn to sight read. Your discussion entry leads me to believe that direct note entry and "hiding" the tablature are commingled.

Hey Rex, thank you so much for the kind words! It's really encouraging and motivating to get this kind of feedback. And I appreciate the detailed bug report!

I'm having a hard time reproducing the issue right now, but the other day I did encounter the same sort of problem with a seemingly indefinite loading screen when trying to open a document. I feel confident that it's the same issue. How long did you let it sit on the loading screen for? When it happened to me, it did eventually load, but it took an excessively long time -- something like five or six minutes.

These kinds of issues can be difficult to diagnose, but what I believe is going on is just that the app is having a hard time downloading the file from iCloud. If that's the case, I don't think there's a whole lot I can do to prevent it, unfortunately, since the download process is controlled by Apple and is dependent on the current state of your network connection and the iCloud servers.

In the next update, though, I'm planning on adding a back button to the loading screen so that you can at least get back to the library if it does take too long. And I believe that the document should still be downloaded in the background when you back out from the loading screen, so you should be able to come back to it later and have it load instantly. I may also be able to add a progress bar rather than just a spinner so that you can at least see that progress is being made.

Have you been able to load any document on the iPad at all? Do the documents load if you choose to not use iCloud?

As for hiding the tablature, that should be coming within the next update or two. The most recent update to the Mac version added the ability to select and edit notes directly on the staff, which was the biggest hurdle towards implementing that feature. I'm currently focusing on preparing the apps for iOS 8 and Yosemite, but as soon as that's ready, tablature hiding is the next feature on the list to add.

Thanks again, I really appreciate it! Apologies for the trouble, and feel free to let me know if there's anything else I can do for you.
