Pickup measures and tied notes...

I was wondering how to add a pickup measure at the beginning of a song. Just a quarter note to the beginning measure. I can't make that measure 1/4 and then make the next one 3/4. Is there any way to make a pickup measure?

Also, tied notes are not behaving... at all. Every time I hit "T" to tie two notes together, the app grabs 3-10 notes and ties them together along with adding more notes. Is there any way to tie only two notes together?

One other thing I have noticed is that in some instances, I can add more beats to a measure than is allowed, i.e. I put 24 half noted in a 4/4 measure. I don't know how or why (its random) but I think its a bug. ;)

    Hey Stephan!

Tabular doesn't currently support pickup measures unfortunately. You'll need to add rests to the beginning to fill out the duration of the measure or adjust the time signature. This will likely change eventually.

Hmm...based on your description I think what you may be doing is selecting both notes that you want to tie together and then pressing T. When you press T, the app will try to tie whatever you have selected to the closest preceding note. So if you're selecting one or more full divisions, it's going to add tied notes to every string in those divisions where there's a preceding note that's close enough. Apologies if that was a bit confusing, but basically what you generally want to do instead is be selecting a single note when you press T.

The app intentionally lets you overfill a measure since it can be inconvenient not to. For example, if want to add a triplet eighth note to the end of a measure, you might try to first add a regular eighth note and then add a triplet notation to it. If there's only room for a triplet eighth, then you wouldn't be able to add the eighth note in the first place. When you're not selecting the over-full measure, it'll highlight the measure in red to let you know that something's wrong.

Hope this was helpful, and let me know if you need anything else!

The pickup measures would be ever so helpful! Thank you for putting that on your to-do list.

The tied notes are a mystery to me. A majority of the time I will have one note highlighted but when I hit T, the previous 3 to 10+ notes are tied to it as well. Once in a while it will just tie two together. Very odd.

I noticed the overfilled notes and how to delete them pretty easily.

    Thank you!

Hmm, I think I see what you mean about the tied notes now. If there are multiple divisions between the note you're selecting and the closest note behind it, then tied notes will be added to each division in-between. Tabular doesn't currently support tying two notes directly across multiple divisions.

If the two notes are directly adjacent to each other, then it shouldn't be creating any extra tied notes. Let me know if that's what's happening!

Jarod, this is a hit-or-miss issue. This is mainly happening when I the tie is between 4/4 measure and a 2/4 measure and vice versa. Very odd.

That is quite strange! I've uploaded a quick video of tied notes being added across 2/4 and 4/4 measures: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qDZUiBtahc4

It's working okay on my end -- if you try to do the same thing, does the problem show up?

OK, extremely weird! I just opened Tabular and the song that was giving me fits... no problems. Very odd. Thank you for the discussion. Don't know what happened that things worked this morning but I am good now!

Ah, well I'm glad it's working! There must be a bug that causes that issue only in certain circumstances and is fixed by restarting the app. I'll keep an eye out for it, thanks for letting me know!
